Indecisive Moment

The Indecisive Moment panel discussion brought up many interesting aspects of contemporary photography. From how each one uses different technologies, to appropriation vs. collaboration, to photography as an object vs. an image, a lot was covered.

One part I really enjoyed was the discussion on how they each used found objects. Jessica Labatte, for example, photographs found pieces of trash in a way that makes them a bit more abstract and keeps the viewer more engaged with the piece. Matt Lipps and Anastasia Samoylova have different approaches to found objects. Lipps uses found images in the more traditional sense of appropriation to make a point. In contrast, Samoylova considers her use of found images to be more of collaborations because she isn't trying to make a point, she's just inspired by them.

The other part I found interesting was the question of photography being an object vs. an image. Each person on the panel had their own take on the subject, but I found Jill Greenberg's to be one of the more interesting ones. In her recent works she photographs wet paintings that she has created. She enhances her paintings with stenciled lights, colored lights, and more. When photograph is done, she gets rid of the painting. Many people ask her why she throws out the paintings, the thing people perceive as the object. However, the painting never was the intended object. The paint dries, the lights go off, and everything used to make the photograph is gone, but the photograph remains and is the object.

Overall the entire discussion taught me a lot. Getting to hear artists discussing their art field and then getting to see their work was very cool. If it was happening again I would definitely go again (and take some better notes) and tell others to go.
